These images are from a photo walk around the humid and hazy backstreets of Kuala Lumpa – taking in the urban grime and decay, the heavy atmosphere, muted greens and reds. Within the chaos of Chinatown there was another dimension to discover – the hidden silence, shadowy secrets and tensions as the crowds navigated the narrow streets.
These images emerged from my iPhone after editing using mobile apps to blur and diffuse. These images were probably amongst my first attempts to loosen those sharp photographic edges and try and capture the essence of the feeling of a place without relying on the visual details. I can’t remember the exact post processing method but I began to tinker… and drift back and forth between taking away detail by using a gaussian blur filter as well as noise reduction and then adding back detail using sharpening and grain.
